As the well-meaning, but bumbling everyman in a series of imaginative and iconic short films, Richard Massingham was recognisable to anyone who went to the cinema in Britain during the 1940s. Providing instructions to the British public on everything from how to cross the road, the correct way to use a handkerchief and the art of saving water at bath time, Massingham managed to entertain and inform in equal measure.

In addition to his charismatic work in front of the camera, Massingham serving as producer and director as well, and his films are acclaimed for their wonderfully inventive combination of comedy, instruction, surrealism and whimsy.
