2001's Princess Diaries (based on the popular novel by Meg Cabot) stars Anne Hathaway in a breakout role as Mia Thermopolis, a teenager who discovers that she is the heir to the throne of the fictional Genovia, ruled by her grandmother, Queen dowager Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews).

Directed by Pretty Woman's Garry Marshall, the film also sees Marshall favourite Héctor Elizondo as Joe, Renaldi's head of security.

The film follows Mia as she undergoes "Princess training" and struggles with love and friendship as she transitions from gawky teenager to royalty

The primary cast and director Marshall returned in 2004 for the sequel Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. As Mia turns 21, she is set to take her grandmother's place as Queen of Genovia, but discovers that she cannot be Queen unless she marries within 30 days!
