Andy Millman (Ricky Gervals) is a struggling actor with ambition and a script. Darren Lamb (Stephen Merchant) is Andy's useless agent and Maggie (Ashley Jensen) is his air-headed best friend.
After getting his comedy script accepted by the BBC, things are looking up for Andy. However, Andy's dreams of becoming a respected auteur are roundly demolished and Andy must claw back what little self-respect he can.
