Crowds took to the streets, but the celebrations did not have the same hysterical joy as had greeted the end of the First World War. It was the culmination of six years of bloody warfare which had devastated the continent and killed tens of millions of people and witnessed the true horror of the Nazi's Final Solution. People were exhausted and only too aware that the conflict must continue until Japan was also defeated.
