Become a Pokémon Trainer

Spawned from the mind of visionary creator Satoshi Tajiri, the Pokémon franchise first appeared in 1996, at which point it was known only as Pocket Monsters, the title preferred in Japan. Though it originated as a series of video games for Nintendo (the first releases being Pokémon Red and Blue), it was later adapted to other formats, such as an animated TV series and a card game, both of which became immensely successful.

The basic premise of the franchise revolves around Trainers, individuals who catch and train monsters that they discover in the different regions of the world, such as Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. Once they have succeeded in capturing a new creature with their Poké Ball, Trainers pit their companions against others of their kind, hoping to claim victory and gain the title of ‘Pokémon Master’. In the case of the animated show, the protagonist is a young boy called Ash Ketchum.
