In 1922 Fritz Lang made the two-part film, Dr Mabuse, der Spieler (Dr. Mabuse, the Gambler), one of the most sensational crime thrillers ever filmed. He resuscitated his evil genius ten years later for a talkie sequel, Das Testament des Dr. Mabuse (The Testament of Dr. Mabuse). The original film had ended with Mabuse's madness, capture and incarceration. This is precisely where the sequel picks up the story. Mabuse has been locked away in an asylum for ten years, but his crime organisation is still perpetrating an insane orgy of wanton destruction, threats, shoot-outs, thefts, explosions, bombings, burnings, and floodings. Rudolf Klein-Rogge reprises his role as Dr. Mabuse. otto Wernicke is back as Inspector Lohmann, who tracked down Peter Lorre's child murderer in Fritz Lang's M. Oscar Beregi portrays Dr. Baum, and Gustav Diessl plays Kent. Fritz Arno Wagner, whose wonderfully fluid cinematography was featured in M, is behind the camera.
