The Mud Men, Johnny Vaughan and Steve Brooker, are digging, delving, and unearthing along the banks of the River Thames and beyond. Follow them as they have a muddy good time in their hunt for buried treasure and hidden history. The Thames has been the lifeblood of London for thousands of years; as a major site for trade, crime, industry and war. For food, drink, death and debauchery, and even as the capitals giant rubbish bin. Britains most iconic river is one of the worlds richest archaeological sites, and the Society of Thames Mudlarks has been finding the treasure there since 1976. Mudlarks are the only people legally allowed to dig on the foreshore of the Thames, but now licensed Mudlark and official Mud God Steve Brooker will show Johnny Vaughan the tricks of the trade. They will recover the rubbish and artefacts from the thick, black mud in which it is has lain enveloped for years, even centuries, to reveal a unique and original perspective on London s rich history. Armed with metal detectors, trowels and shovels, the pair dig along the banks of the Thames uncovering a whole manner of artefacts; from jewelled daggers to slave manacles, medieval tiles to cursed Bellarmine pots. This leads them on a quest through the streets of the capital and to the Museum of London to unlock the secrets of our remarkable past.
