Return to war-time Dundee for a film show celebrating the city of jute jam and journalism.
Featuring:
Opening of Green Playhouse
Dundee
The Tay Bridge Disaster
Railway Ride over the Tay Bridge
Children of the City.
Imagine it's wartime Dundee. You are in the audience in Green's Playhouse for a film show about the city, beginning with a short film celebrating the opening of the cinema in 1936. 'Dundee' (1939) in which a visitor learns about the city's origins, was premiered on September 3rd 1939, but abandoned midway through when the outbreak of war was announced. Ian Rintoul's film reconstruction of the Tay Bridge Disaster of 1879, is next, followed by a rare and recently restored film from 1897 of a train ride over the new bridge. The show closes with "Children of the City" (1943), a look at war time Dundee as men and women struggle with the twin responsibilities of their families and working for the war effort.
